o Japan's Nikon to Cease
Production of Most Film Cameras
Tokyo - Japanese camera manufacturer Nikon announced on
Thursday that it plans to essentially end production of its film
cameras and instead focus on digital camera technology, following
the lead of competitors including Canon and Kodak. The company will
soon produce only two film-based cameras, and also plans to halt
production of most of its traditional film camera lenses. Nikon
spokesman Akira Abe told The New York Times that film cameras
accounted for just 3% of sales at Nikon's camera division in its
last fiscal year, down 16% from the previous year, while digital
cameras now generate 75% of sales.

o IBM, Sony,
Toshiba Extend Pact That Produced PlayStation's "Cell" Processor
Tokyo - IBM, Sony and Toshiba announced that they have
renewed a joint venture to develop advanced chips for consumer
electronics, their first collaboration having resulted in the Cell
processor that will power Sony's PlayStation 3 video game console.
The companies invested a total of about $400 million to develop the
Cell over the last five years; the new five-year agreement will
focus on even smaller chips. "This is a winning combination," said
Masashi Muromachi, president and CEO of Toshiba's semiconductor
division. "With Toshiba's cutting-edge process technology and
manufacturing capabilities, Sony's various semiconductor
technologies and deep knowledge of consumer markets and IBM's
state-of-the-art material technology, we can anticipate breakthrough
process technologies for the 32-nanometer generation and beyond."

o Report:
Spitzer's Digital Music Probe Centered on Labels' Price Guarantees
Los Angeles - New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's
ongoing probe into digital music price-fixing is centering on the
"most-favored nation" status that record labels have demanded when
licensing their songs to online services, ensuring they get the same
rates as their rivals, the Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday.
"Some of the major labels have proposed and re-proposed and insisted
on the inclusion in their licenses of most-favored nations clauses
which would grant that label the benefits and pricing negotiated by
a competing label," Jonathan Potter, executive director of the
Digital Media Assn., which represents Apple, Yahoo and others, told
the Times. "Collusion has never been known to lower prices." While
executives at some music companies told the Times that such clauses
have not been activated, executives at online music retailers said
they have been enacted several times -- to ensure a label gets the
highest-price download, or even mandate that a retailer exert equal
marketing efforts to promote a label's artists.

o European
Experts Launch Internet Search Engine Quaero
Paris - According to a report by the Associated Press
(AP), a group of experts in France and Germany has launched a new
Internet search engine called Quaero that is being touted as
Europe's answer to Google. Although Quaero is still composed of only
a small number of researchers in laboratories across France and
Germany, the group told AP their aim was to build the world's most
advanced multimedia search engine. Designers also said that Quaero,
which means "to search" in Latin, would be not just a search engine,
but "a set of tools for translating, identifying and indexing
images, sound and text". Corporate and academic partners on the
project include Thomson, Deutsche Telekom, Bertin Technologies and
the University of Karlsruhe.

o Screener DVD
Regional Coding Snafu Hurts BAFTA Chances for "Munich"
London - A regional coding conflict on DVD screener copies
of Steven Spielberg's film "Munich" sent to voters for the British
Academy of Film and Television Arts means that the film -- not yet
released in Britain -- will likely not garner many BAFTA Awards
nominations, which close today, the Associated Press reported. The
DVDs sent to BAFTA voters bore the regional code of the United
States, meaning they would not play in U.K. DVD players. Regional
coding of DVDs is intended to stymie foreign DVD imports and
maintain the studios' home video release windows. Premier PR, the
firm representing U.K. distributor United International Pictures,
claimed fault for the mistake. Premier's Sara Keene acknowledged to
the Associated Press that the error could very well reduce the
film's chances for awards nominations.

o British Library
Offers Digitized, Multimedia Version of Mozart Manuscript
London - The British Library on Thursday announced the
launch of a digitized version of a manuscript penned by Mozart,
allowing users to browse the handwritten manuscript containing 30
pages and 75 musical introductions to the composer's works. The
digitized excerpt from Mozart's "Catalog of all my Works" allows
users to click and listen to the opening bars of well-known Mozart
compositions like "The Magic Flute" and "The Marriage of Figaro," in
addition to works recorded for the first time for the library's
website.

o Digimarc to Support
File-Sharing Trade Group's Watermarking Forays
Beaverton, Ore. - Digimarc, a developer of digital
watermarking technology used in copyright protection, announced on
Thursday that it is offering support to the new P2P Digital
Watermarking Working Group of the Distributed Computing Industry
Association (DCIA), a trade group of 72 file-sharing software
providers and related companies that includes Sharman Networks,
Grokster and Shared Media Licensing. Last week, the DCIA released a
letter in which it stated that digital watermarking "offers
meaningful resolution to the issue at hand," agreeing with the
Supreme Court's assessment of the technology in its landmark
Grokster file-sharing verdict. "We are pleased that the DCIA has
recognized digital watermarking as an effective tool for identifying
copyrighted entertainment content, including music, movies and
images, for the purpose of deterring copyright infringement," said
Digimarc executive vice president Reed Stager. "As a pioneer and
leader in digital watermarking, we are happy to support this
initiative."

o Wireless Streaming
Media Developer StreamerNet Raises $1 Million
Leesburg, Va. - StreamerNet, a provider of streaming media
tools and services, disclosed on Thursday that it has raised $1
million in private equity financing over the past several months,
including a $500,000 round that closed in late December. The
company, which did not disclose further details, has now completed
three rounds of funding. William Hornbeck, the president and CEO of
StreamerNet, said that the recent financings "strengthen our cash
position and allow us to aggressively pursue new business
opportunities and market development." Hornbeck said that most of
the money the company raised prior to 2005 went toward research and
development. StreamerNet has developed software and services that
allow users to wirelessly transmit video directly from the field to
the Internet.
