o Report: 2005 Global Digital Music Revenues Triple to $1.1 Billion

London - Global digital music sales tripled in 2005, to $1.1 billion, or 6% of record companies' revenues, as consumers downloaded 420 million songs from online retailers and mobile phone networks, according to a report from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Ringtones and mobile song downloads generated over $400 million, or 40% of digital music revenues. The IFPI noted that there are now over 2 million songs available for purchase online, from 335 legal download sites -- up from 50 two years ago. The industry's ongoing fight against file-sharing and piracy is having some effect in the U.K. and Germany, the IFPI said, where 6% of Internet users now regularly pay for digital music, as compared with 5% who use illegitimate file-sharing services. The group said that record labels have now filed nearly 20,000 lawsuits against file-swappers in 17 countries.

o Hollywood, Technology Firms Team to Educate on TV Parental Controls

Washington - A group that includes Hollywood movie studios, TV networks, consumer electronics firms and cable and satellite TV providers on Thursday announced an effort to educate parents on existing technologies that can be used to control what their children watch on TV. Led by former Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) head Jack Valenti, who testified about the effort before the Senate Commerce Committee, the group includes the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA); the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB); the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA); major television networks; the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA); satellite providers DirecTV and EchoStar; and the Ad Council. "Polls show that some 70 to 80 percent of parents believe there are programs on TV unsuitable for children," Valenti testified. "The same percentage also report they do not want government to step in and fix this problem. From these facts about the public's revealed opinion, we present a common sense plan that will convey to American parents that they have, right now, all the weaponry they need to control all the TV programming that enters their home." The group will spend between $250 and $300 million to produce and air ads on the V-chip, satellite and cable channel blocking, and TV ratings system. The campaign will also include educational and instructional materials distributed in electronics retail stores, and outreach to religious and parents' advocacy groups.

o Study: Internet Search Users Still Prefer Google

San Mateo, Calif. - Google is still the king of Internet search, according to a new customer experience study released by Keynote Systems. For the fourth straight year, Google topped the firm's rankings by outperforming its competitors in all 13 categories measured, including those for general search quality, local search quality and image search quality. Yahoo Search ranked second, Ask Jeeves third, MSN fourth and AOL's public site fifth. "Despite active competitive maneuverings, Google's challengers have yet to break the leader's grip on consumers' affections, although each of the search engines has their own loyal following," said Bonny Brown, the director of research and public services for Keynote. "The clear appeal of Google's homepage, as well as its presentation of sponsored ads and the overall usefulness of its ads continue to be important factors in Google's continuing success."

o Majesco Lays Off 20% of Staff, Exits Premium Games Market

Edison, N.J. - Video game publisher Majesco Entertainment announced that it has laid off 20% of its staff and plans to exit the premium console video game publishing business, citing development costs and a disappointing fourth quarter. The company's fourth quarter revenue was $4.6 million, down from $45.3 million a year earlier, while its net loss was $34.2 million, compared with net income of $16.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2004. New Jersey-based Majesco plans now to focus on developing and publishing budget-priced console games, and titles for handheld devices. "This has been a difficult year for Majesco," said Majesco president Jesse Sutton. "We entered the premium console market with high expectation for success, but as a result of a variety of factors we were not able to meet our expectations. Recently, we evaluated our product portfolio and have sold or cancelled most of our premium console titles that were scheduled for release in 2006 and beyond."

o Most Brits Uninterested in Wi-Fi Services, Survey Says

London - According to a new survey by electronics giant Toshiba, Brits have yet to warm to the idea of using Wi-Fi on their laptops. Only one in 10 respondents said they used Wi-Fi in hotels, while just 7% use Wi-Fi on trains. Less than 3% said they use the wireless service in coffee shops. About 23% of respondents said they were unwilling to pay for the service, while 19% said they were reluctant to use Wi-Fi because of security concerns. Nearly one in five admitted they do not know how to use the wireless functions of their laptops. Fifteen percent said there were too few hotspots throughout the U.K. to make the service worthwhile. "Many users appear to be failing to capitalise on the opportunities presented to them through mobility," said Toshiba's Steve Crawley.
