o Google's Big Gains Fall Short of
Expectations
Mountain View, Calif. - Despite sharp gains in both
revenue and net income, shares of Google fell as much as 19% in
after-hours trading Tuesday after the search giant reported
quarterly results that fell short of lofty Wall Street expectations.
Excluding one-time items, the company posted net income $469
million, or $1.54 a share, up from $204.1 million, or $0.71 a share,
during the same period a year ago. Analysts surveyed by Thomson
First Call, however, had predicted earnings per share of $1.76.
Revenue came in at $1.92 billion, nearly double the amount of a year
ago, but only matched expectations after topping them for each of
the previous five quarters since its IPO.

o Report:
Google Considering Partnership, Acquisition of Napster
New York - Google is considering a possible acquisition of
Napster, or else a strategic alliance with the digital music
service, the New York Post reported on Tuesday, citing "sources
within the music industry." The search giant is reportedly looking
to partner with an existing digital music provider rather than
developing its own service. The report sent shares of Napster up 30%
on Tuesday. Last week, Napster told Reuters that it was not actively
seeking buyers, responding to media reports that included layoff
rumors. The company did acknowledge that it laid off ten middle
managers last week.

Dulles, Va. - Frank Biondi, the former CEO of Viacom, has
joined billionaire Carl Icahn in a proxy fight for control of media

of the company's America Online unit, Icahn's group said. Biondi
would serve as Time Warner's CEO, if the group manages to gain
control of the company’s board of directors. A report from the
investment bank Lazard, commissioned by Icahn and expected to be
released next week, will provide a detailed plan of how Time Warner
could be restructured to maximize the company's business prospects
and share price, Icahn said. The plan will include separating Time
Warner's component businesses and significantly reducing corporate
overhead.
