o Disney's Moviebeam VOD Service Raises $48.5 Million

New York - Moviebeam, a video-on-demand service launched by Disney in several markets in 2003 but suspended last year, has raised $48.5 million in new venture capital funding, Reuters reported on Monday. Both Disney and networking equipment firm Cisco Systems participated in the investment round, as did venture capital firms including Intel Capital, Mayfield Fund, Norwest Venture Partners and Vantage Point Venture Partners. Moviebeam spokeswoman Michelle Cox told Reuters that Disney remains the company's largest investor, but declined to itemize the other investors' contributions. Moviebeam utilized unused spectrum from TV broadcasters to "datacast" movies and other content to set-top boxes in consumers' homes. The service launched in three cities in 2003, but suspended all service in 2005, saying it planned to upgrade technology. The spokeswoman declined to tell Reuters when Moviebeam plans to re-launch.

o AOL and Yahoo Plan to Charge Fee to Bulk E-mailers to Evade Filters

Dulles, Va. - AOL and Yahoo have developed a plan to charge e-mail marketers a fee to allow their emails to bypass spam filtering technologies that often block legitimate e-mail. The move -- being compared to stamps on letters -- is aimed at allowing legitimate marketers (such as banks, publishers and associations) to get their email messages through spam filters that often block requested messages. Companies using the fee-based system would need to verify that they have been given permission to send email to the end-user. Goodmail Systems said on Monday that its technology will be used for the new system, which would be voluntary. Marketers not wanting to pay the fee would be allowed to use the existing system, but risk that their messages be blocked by spam filters. The New York Times reported that both companies are considering charging between 1/4 a cent to 1 cent per email for those firms joining the program.

o Google Blacklists BMW for Boosting Ranking, Blogger Says

Frankfurt - According to a blog by Matt Cutts, a software engineer for Google, the U.S.-based Internet search-engine giant has blacklisted the German website of BMW after the carmaker allegedly tried to boost its popularity ranking artificially. Cutts claims BMW employed a practice called search-engine optimization to ensure that searches for "BMW" and "used cars" returned to BMW's website first -- a practice that apparently runs counter to Google guidelines. Cutts said Google placed a "Google Death Penalty" on BMW's German website that lowers its Internet profile.

o Google and Skype Invest $21.7 Million in Spain's Fon

Madrid - Fon, a Spain-based company dedicated to creating an international network of shared Wi-Fi connections, announced that it has raised more than $21.7 million in its first round of venture capital financing. Index Ventures led the round, with Google, Sequoia Capital and Skype also participating. Fon's goal is to create a grass-roots network of shared Wi-Fi links by turning individual users into an army of so-called "foneros," or people sharing wireless access.

The company was co-founded by Daniel Neal, the former CEO of VCampus Corp; Matthew D. Baker, co-founder of STSN, and Ben Weintraub, former COO and co-founder of SimplyWireless.com. "With Kajeet, I'm helping to build the mobile devices and services I want my own daughter -- and her parents -- to have," said Neal.

o NetRatings Sues WebSideStory for Patent Infringement

New York - NetRatings, a provider of Internet audience measurement and market research, announced on Monday that filed patent infringement claims against WebSideStory, a provider of Internet marketing services. New York-based NetRatings says the five patents in question cover the "collection, analysis and reporting of information concerning computer usage activity." "Our patented technologies are at the core of NetRatings' high quality, innovative product portfolio," said NetRatings CEO William Pulver.
