o Bush Proposes Spectrum Taxes on
Broadcasters to Speed Digital Transition Washington -- In his
$2.57 trillion budget proposal submitted to Congress this week,
President Bush included a plan to tax broadcasters who don't meet a
2006 deadline for transitioning to a digital signal with a $500
million fee for the use of their analog spectrum. Some lawmakers
have been pressing hard for a speedier transition to digital, as
they estimate an auction of broadcasters' newly freed analog
spectrum could bring the government up to $100 billion. Congress has
already imposed a deadline of the end of 2006 for broadcasters to
switch from analog to digital broadcasts, or else when 85% of
Americans have purchased the new televisions required to receive a
digital signal. While incoming House Commerce Committee chairman
Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) has said he wants to impose a strict
deadline, broadcasters have balked at the idea. "For more than a
decade, Congress has wisely rejected spectrum taxes on broadcasters
because lawmakers recognized the timetable for transitioning to
digital television will be determined by consumer acceptance of this
new technology and not by arbitrary, budget-driven timelines,"
National Association of Broadcasters spokesman Dennis Wharton told
Reuters.

o Search Engine
Provider Ask Jeeves Acquires Bloglines
Oakland, Calif. -- Ask Jeeves, a provider of search engine and
online ad services, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired
Trustic, the parent company of free online blogging tools provider
Bloglines. Financial terms of the deal, which parallels rival search
engine Google's acquisition of Blogger.com, were not disclosed.
Founded in 2003, Redwood City, Calif.-based Bloglines currently
indexes more than 280 million news feeds, blog articles, images,
audio and video elements, providing its services in seven languages.
Oakland-based Ask Jeeves said it plans to integrate Bloglines' RSS
aggregation capabilities with its Teoma algorithmic search
technology. "Bloglines is a natural fit for our multi-brand
portfolio, as we extend our information retrieval services to
encompass the rapidly growing amount of dynamic content and
information available in the blogosphere," said Jim Lanzone, senior
vice president of search properties for Ask Jeeves.

Reston, Va. -- Budweiser.com was the big online winner among
Super Bowl advertisers, with traffic to its web site rising nearly
600% on Sunday, according to comScore, a provider of Internet
audience measurement services. A controversial ad by web services
company GoDaddy.com drove traffic to that site 378% above average,
while viewers seeking more information about the Olympus m:robe
portable media player turned up traffic volume at OlympusAmerica.com
by 363%. Other winners included Apple iTunes (up 170%), Cadillac (up
171%) and halftime sponsor Ameriquest Mortgage (up 98%).

o Survey:
Only 4% of Brits Plan to Upgrade Phones to 3G
London -- According to a new survey commissioned by Netonomy and
conducted by YouGov, 3G telephony has left most U.K. consumers
simply confused. In fact, only 4% of those surveyed said they were
planning to upgrade their existing mobile phones to 3G handsets,
which will enable a new wave of wireless multimedia services for
music, movies and games. The majority of respondents said they felt
there were too many features on 3G handsets, not to mention too many
ways to pay for them. "The concern is that if they do not make it
simple and less frightening for consumers it may impact the growth
of 3G," said Netonomy co-founder John Hughes, who added that most
operators were doing a very poor job of informing customers about
their options. To date, 3 UK, Vodafone, Orange and O2 have launched
3G networks in the U.K. T-Mobile is expected to follow suit later
this year.

o Tandberg
Television Buys N2 Broadband for $117 Million
London -- Tandberg Television, a U.K.-based video compression
firm, announced on Tuesday that it has completed its acquisition of
N2 Broadband, an on-demand digital multimedia firm based in Atlanta,
Georgia. Under the terms of the acquisition, Tandberg will pay
approximately $117 million in cash and shares. Moreover, N2
Broadband CEO Reggie Bradford will become president of Tandberg
Television, and the newly merged company will be headquartered in
Atlanta. "The N2 Broadband acquisition significantly accelerates the
growth opportunities for both companies," said Tandberg President
and CEO Eric Cooney. "For Tandberg Television, the addition of N2
Broadband immediately provides us with increased market presence in
North America, as well as giving us new products that dovetail with
our existing solutions to provide the world's most advanced open VOD
systems." On completion of the deal, the entire N2 Broadband
business will be integrated into Tandberg Television and use its
name in all markets, Cooney said.

mobile and consumer electronics markets, said on Monday that it has

new $350 million fund. The firm said that it plans to make another
