Los Angeles - Sony Computer Entertainment of America on
Tuesday unveiled its next-generation PlayStation 3 video game
console, which will go on sale in North America on Nov. 17 as part

Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Sony said the console will sell

processor and be able to play movies on Sony's next-generation DVD
format, Blu-ray; other features include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
connectivity, and support for output of high-definition video up to
1080p. Sony has also designed a new controller for the PS3,
featuring a six-axis motion-sensing system. The company aims to ship
4 million PS3 consoles by Dec. 31, and 2 million more by March 31,
2007.

o Nintendo to Launch
Next-Generation Wii Console in Fourth Quarter
Los Angeles - Nintendo announced on Tuesday that its
next-generation Wii (pronounced "we") video game console will be
released in the fourth quarter of 2006 and be "priced affordably for
the mass market." The console will feature the Wii Remote, an
unorthodox controller design that features an embedded speaker and
uses elaborate motion-sensors to direct gameplay. Games in
development for the Wii include a new "Metroid Prime" title, a new
Mario game and "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess," which will
be available at launch.

o Warner
Bros. to Distribute Movies, TV Shows on BitTorrent P2P Network
Burbank, Calif. - Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group on
Tuesday announced an agreement with peer-to-peer file-sharing
software distributor BitTorrent, that will see film and TV content
distributed in the U.S. over the network once targeted with
copyright infringement lawsuits by the movie studios. The
announcement comes after the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
struck a deal with BitTorrent to prevent film piracy and promote
innovation in digital distribution. BitTorrent's "file-swarming"
technology, wherein bulky video files are broken into small portions
(torrents) to speed delivery across the network, will be used to
distribute Warner content via video-on-demand and paid downloads,
and in some cases for movies day-and-date with their DVD release.
Slated to launch this summer, the service will initially feature
more than 200 titles, including "Harry Potter and the Goblet of
Fire," "North Country," "The Matrix" and TV shows "Babylon 5" and
"The Dukes of Hazzard". "Entering into agreements such as this to
distribute our content is not only a better way to reach existing
and new customers but a reflection of the critical role distribution
technologies play in the future of the entertainment industry," said
Darcy Antonellis, executive vice president of distribution
technology and operations for Warner Bros. Technical Operations.

series, including the current "24," "Prison Break" and "The Shield,"
and library titles like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly" and

iTunes from ABC, NBC, CBS, MTV Networks and other broadcasters and

o AOL to
Cut 1,300 Call-Center Jobs, Close Facility
Dulles, Va. - Responding to a continuing decline in the
number of subscribers to its dial-
up Internet service, AOL on Tuesday announced plans to cut about
1,300 jobs, or about 7% of its total workforce. The company said
that it will close its call center in Jacksonville, Fla., and cut
positions from call centers in Ogden, Utah, and Tucson, Ariz. AOL,
which said that its call center volume has decreased 50% over the
past two years, also cut about 700 call center jobs last fall. The
moves come as AOL is attempting to reinvent itself, shifting from a
provider of Internet access to an advertising-supported portal along
the lines of Yahoo and Google. As of March 31, the company had 18.6
million subscribers, down from a high of 26.7 million in 2002.

o "Grand
Theft Auto IV" to Ship in October for PS3, Xbox 360
New York - Rockstar Games, a unit of video game publisher
Take-Two Interactive, announced on Tuesday from the Electronic
Entertainment Expo that it plans to publish "Grand Theft Auto IV,"
the latest installment in its top-selling game franchise, for
PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in October 2007. In development at
Rockstar North in Edinburgh, Scotland, the game will ship on Oct. 16
in North America and in Europe on Oct. 19, 2007. Rockstar and
Take-Two had to recall copies of the last installment of the
franchise, after it was discovered that a sexually explicit
mini-game hidden in the game's source code could be unlocked with a
key downloaded from the Internet. The game was given a more
stringent "Adults Only" rating and removed from many retailers'
shelves while the publisher readied an alternate version that
removed the offensive code. Take-Two is still facing a number of
class action lawsuits and an FTC probe over the matter.
