o Sony to Ship PlayStation 3 in Early 2006

Los Angeles -- Sony Computer Entertainment on Tuesday unveiled its PlayStation 3 next-generation video game console, which it plans to release in the spring of 2006. The device, which will come in black, silver and white, will run on the Cell processor developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, providing computing power of 2 teraflops, and feature an Nvidia graphics processor that supports 1080p high-definition graphics. It will also feature a Blu-ray DVD drive that plays 54 GB discs, a detachable hard drive, and Bluetooth wireless connection that can connect as many as seven game controllers. Initial PlayStation 3 game titles hinted at by publishers include a new Square Enix "Final Fantasy" title, Bandai's "Gundam World," KOEI's "NI-OH" and Capcom's "Devil May Cry 4." The PlayStation 3 will also be able to play all of the 13,000 titles previously developed for the PlayStation 2 and original PlayStation; Sony said it has to date shipped 89 million PlayStation 2 consoles worldwide. No pricing details were released for the PlayStation 3. Rival Microsoft plans to release its next-generation Xbox 360 in the fall of 2005, while Nintendo will ship its "Revolution" console sometime in 2006.

Los Angeles -- Nintendo on Tuesday provided the first glimpses of its next-generation "Revolution" video game console, which will be much smaller than either the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, and also for the first time announced a new handheld console, the 4-inch by 2-inch Game Boy Micro. The Revolution, slated for release sometime in 2006, will sport an IBM processor and ATI graphics chip, built-in Wi-Fi, 512MB of flash memory and support for DVD playback. o Strike Looms as Actors' Contract Talks With Game Publishers Break Down

Los Angeles -- Contract negotiations between video game publishers and the labor unions that represent actors who lend their voices and likenesses to video games have broken down, although publishers still believe they can avoid a strike, Reuters reported on Tuesday. Representatives of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) have argued that actors should receive compensation based on game sales, in addition to up-front payments for their work. Members of both guilds have voted to authorize leadership to call a strike. "It is not that we don't value their (actors') professional talent ... (but) we do not value it to the extent of giving them a lifetime income stream from the product," Howard Fabrick, an attorney for the video game publishers, told Reuters -- adding that actors' contributions represent 1/2400th of the labor that goes into making a game. Screen Actors Guild president Melissa Gilbert responded in a statement: "There is only one way to describe their position: completely unreasonable and lacking in any appreciation of the contributions made by actors to the enormous profits enjoyed by this industry."

o New York Times to Begin Charging for Web Editorials

New York -- The New York Times Company has announced plans to begin charging for Web access to some of its columnists' editorials and story archives. The TimesSelect service will be free for print edition subscribers, but otherwise will cost Web users $49.95 per year. While the majority of the paper's content will remain free online, the major effect of the new service will be that editorials from columnists including Frank Rich, Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman, David Brooks and Nicholas Kristof will not. Some argued this will decrease their overall influence, as bloggers in particular will be less likely to link to paid stories. "There were people arguing to put the entire thing in," the Times' Martin Nisenholtz told the Associated Press. "There were people arguing to put none of it in... I think we've made the decision we've made for the foreseeable future." Nisenholtz added that the new service is expected to further increase the more than $1 million a year that the paper's online archives generate.

o BBC Launches Trial of "iTunes for the Broadcast Industry"

London -- The BBC announced that it has begun to trial a new program download technology in 5,000 U.K. households that could pave the way to endless TV repeats. The BBC said it hoped to deliver its interactive Media Player (iMP), or "iTunes for the broadcast industry", by year's end, allowing viewers to download any shows from the previous week. Once up and running, the service, currently in its second stage, will make around 190 hours of TV shows and 310 hours of radio programs available for legal downloading across the U.K., the BBC said. "iMP … (will allow) our audience to access our TV and radio programs on their terms … anytime, any place, any how," said Ashley Highfield, BBC director of new media and technology. "We'll see what programs appeal in this new world and how people search, sort, snack and savor our content in the broadband world."
