o MPAA's Content Protection Status Report Aims to "Plug the Analog
Hole"
Washington -- A report recently submitted by the Motion Picture
Association of America (MPAA) to the Senate Judiciary Committee outlines
new proposals from Hollywood that would protect their copyrighted works on
the Internet. Specifically, the Content Protection Status Report suggests
that watermarks be embedded into all analog-to-digital converters (ADCs)
so that no copyrighted material may be transmitted between recording
devices of any kind. The result would be that digital camcorders snuck
into theaters to capture and pirate new movies wouldn't work; nor would
the process of creating digital music files by connecting a stereo to a PC
by means of cheap store-bought cables.

o Eminem Album Release Accelerated; Bootlegging, Internet Piracy Cited
Santa Monica -- The release date of an upcoming album from rapper
Eminem
has been moved up several days to Sunday, May 26, due to what the artist's
label Aftermath/Interscope terms "unprecedented demand as well as
illegal
bootlegging and Internet piracy." A Sunday release date is uncommon
in the
recording industry, which traditionally releases albums on Tuesdays.
"Our
mandate as a company was to put the album in listeners' hands the way
Eminem intended them to get it, and to do it as quickly as possible to
battle the problems we were having with illicit copying," said Steve
Berman, head of sales and marketing for Interscope Geffen A&M. A
representative from Gracenote, a company that provides a weekly top 10
list of the CDs most listened to by computer users with the CD recognition
software installed on their PCs, told The Los Angeles Times that "The
Eminem Show" was the second-most-frequently-played CD on computers
last
week, which Gracenote reports is the highest showing ever by an unreleased
album.

o Wired News: FBI Asks Websites, ISPs to Remove Daniel Pearl Video
Washington -- Wired News reported on Friday that the FBI has been
contacting certain website owners and Internet service providers, asking
them to remove copies of a video that depicts the execution of Daniel
Pearl, the 38-year-old Wall Street Journal reporter who was slain in
Pakistan by a radical Muslim group. Virginia-based hosting provider Pro
Hosting told Wired News that it was contacted by the FBI regarding
Ogrish.com, a site it hosts that features macabre content and had been
offering the video. CBS recently aired a 30-second excerpt of the
four-minute video, which Pearl's family called "heartless." Dow
Jones,
publisher of the Wall Street Journal, also told Wired News that upon
finding copies of the video online, it has responded by calling the
authorities and then letting them deal with the matter. Copies of the
video still persist online from a number of sites, as well as on various
file-sharing services.

Reason #21: Over 15 million US households will have broadband access

And according to the same Jupiter research, another 5 million households

of subscription services through eliminating a major friction - or
undermine it by enabling easier file sharing?

(San Francisco) CNET on Friday reported on the reluctance of some video

Microsoft's $2 billion investment into its Xbox Live online gaming
initiative. "Online gaming is a parlor trick at [video game industry
