o Report: U.K. Song Download Sales
Reach 500,000
London -- The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) reports that
sales of digital music downloads in the U.K. have now surpassed
500,000 for the year. The lion's share of these downloads were sold
by OD2, which powers the leading U.K. online music stores. Napster
recently launched its service in the U.K., although its initial
sales were not included in the report. "Investors are showing
confidence in the future of music and putting their money into new
download stores, and music consumers are voting with their wallets
and buying in the hundreds of thousands," said BPI chairman Peter
Jamieson. Apple also plans to soon launch its iTunes Store in the
U.K.; by contrast, the U.S. version of Apple's store has sold over
70 million songs in just over a year.

o News.com:
Labels Looking to Limit CD Burning Capabilities
San Francisco -- Citing the unfettered copying of CDs enabled by
CD burners, the major record labels are currently testing technology
that would limit the number of times a CD may be copied, and
eliminate the ability to make copies of copies, CNET News.com
reported on Wednesday. Anti-piracy firms SunnComm and Macrovision
are developing such technologies in cooperation with the labels,
with SunnComm and BMG already testing a "secure burn" solution and
Macrovision expected to release its technology within several
months. "If there's somebody who's making 25 copies for the world
and finds they can't do that, then few people will probably
complain. But if someone finds they can't make a copy for their kid
so he can play it in the car, you're going to have a lot of people
returning broken CDs," Mike McGuire, an analyst with GartnerG2, told
News.com. A Macrovision executive told News.com that the labels are
also interested in further limiting the amount of copying that can
be done with songs purchased from online services like iTunes and
Napster.

o Nintendo to
Preview Next-Generation GameCube Console at E3 2005
Kyoto, Japan -- Japanese video games firm Nintendo has announced
that it will preview its next-generation GameCube video game console
at next year's Electronic Entertainment Expo gaming industry
convention. The company could then launch the console in Japan by
Christmas 2005, with an eye toward a possible spring 2006 launch in
the U.S. "Rather than offering a new edition of the same thing, we
want to offer new ways of game playing," senior managing director
Yoshihiro Mori said of the device. The company did not reveal any
other details of the console as part of the announcement.

o McDonald's to
Offer Free Song Downloads from Sony Connect Store
London -- Fast food restaurant chain McDonald's has partnered with
Sony Music on a promotion to offer free music downloads from Sony's
new online music store, The Financial Times reported. Free downloads
would be included when McDonald's customers purchase the
restaurant's signature Big Mac sandwich. Sony launched its Connect
online music store last month, to compete with rival services from
Apple, Napster and others. Similar promotions have seen Napster
downloads offered by Heineken and Energizer, and Apple offering
songs on bottles of Coca-Cola.

new Windows Media Player 10 software, which aims to make it easier
for consumers to integrate music, movies and pictures on their PCs

support new Microsoft synchronization technology that more
intuitively moves media from computer to portable device, and
supports content from subscription-based services like Napster and

(London) Online games in China will soon need government approval
before they may be released in the Communist nation, TheRegister
reported. Games that challenge China's constitution or sovereignty,
and anything that threatens "state security, damaging the nation's
glory, disturbing social order and infringing on other's legitimate
rights" will be banned. The government has already censored one PC
title, "Hearts of Iron," in which Tibet is depicted as an
independent nation.

(London) The Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF), a consortium of
mobile entertainment publishers, in association with The Official UK
Charts Company, which compiles music sales data for the U.K., have
published the first top twenty chart for U.K. ringtones sales data.
A ringtone for Eamon's "F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)" was the top
seller for the period of May 10-23. "Persuading ringtone providers
to share their confidential sales data was initially a challenge.
However, we are now seeing more companies wanting to join," said
David Simmons, head of the MEF ringtones initiative. Participating
ringtone vendors include Amplefuture, Buongiorno/Vitaminic,
Infomedia, Musiwave, Opera and Phonefurniture.

(Libertyville, Ill.) Cell phone maker Motorola on Wednesday
introduced the V710, a 1.2 megapixel camera phone with integrated
video capture and playback, and an MP3 player. The company financed
a short "advertainment" film featuring the device called "String
Theory," which was directed by indie filmmaker Scott Sanders.

(New York) Consumer electronics developer VeriTouch has
introduced its iVue Personal Media Player, which secures digital
media content like music, movies and video games by requiring a live
fingerprint scan before a file may be copied, shared or otherwise
distributed. With massively popular file-sharing networks like Kazaa
and Morpheus, the only true solution will be encrypting content at
its origin, and protecting all further distribution through secure
playback devices like iVue," said VeriTouch CEO Gary Brant.

(Philadelphia) Cable TV operator Comcast on Wednesday a premium
video games-on-demand service for its high speed Internet customers
at Comcast.net. The $14.95 per month service, powered by
Maryland-based Exent Technologies, will offer PC games including
Atari's "Dead Man's Hand" and Scholastic Media's "Clifford Thinking
Adventures" and "I SPY Fantasy." The service will also provide
original content from G4techTV, the Comcast's video gaming and
technology cable network.

(Los Angeles) Game publisher Vivendi Universal Games on Wednesday
shipped its "Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage" and "Spyro
Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy" titles for Nintendo Game Boy Advance.
Developed by Troy, N.Y.-based Vicarious Visions, both titles feature
multiplayer modes for up to four players. VU Games said its "Crash"
franchise has sold 30 million units since debuting in 1996, while
the "Spyro" franchise has sold 12 million units since 1998.

(Austin) A nonprofit family foundation has launched a contest
challenging college student video game developers to create a title
that "secretly" teaches middle school subjects to kids. The Liemandt
Foundation organized the contest, with help from Trilogy, NCSoft and
the Digital Media Collaboratory at the University of Texas. Judging
criteria for the contest will be skewed 70% entertainment value and
30% educational value.

(London) Tira Wireless, a provider of technology used to port
wireless games between platforms, said on Wednesday that mobile game
publisher iFone will use its Tira Jump solution to port titles under
its licenses from Atari and Hasbro for J2ME-enabled cell phones.

(London) TheRegister reports that a French company has developed
a new disposable line of DVDs, which will become unplayable within
24 hours of being removed from their packages and exposed to the
air. Denys Arcand's "The Barbarian Invasions," along with 700 other
movie titles, will soon be available in the disposable DVD-D format.
Another company, Flexplay Technologies, has also seen its EZ-D
disposable DVDs distributed by Disney's Buena Vista Home
Entertainment, despite complaints from numerous environmental
groups.

(San Francisco) The San Francisco Chronicle recently reported on
the slow transition of some Bay Area radio stations to digital
broadcasting. Because of its large hills and buildings, the city has
some of the worst FM reception in the country, and so is an ideal
early adopter for iBiquity Digital's HD Radio. However, only six
area stations have made the conversion, and only 110 of the
country's 10,700 commercial stations are broadcasting digitally.
Radios costing over $400 needed to pick up the digital signal are
also an impediment, causing analysts to estimate it could be another
20 years before all radios become digital.
