o SESAC Reaches Licensing Agreements With Satellite Radio Firms XM, Sirius

Nashville, Tenn. -- Performing rights organization SESAC, which represents
songwriters and music publishers, announced on Tuesday that it has signed
licensing agreements with the nation's two satellite radio providers, XM
Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. Financial terms of the
multi-year deals were not disclosed. Under the agreements,
Washington-based XM and New York-based Sirius will pay royalty fees to
SESAC in exchange for the right to play compositions from SESAC artists on
their respective services. "Satellite radio is an exciting new medium that
provides a tremendous opportunity for music and artists in every genre to
be heard across the country. We are very happy to be working with both
Sirius and XM," said Pat Collins, Tennessee-based SESAC's senior vice
president for licensing. Once limited to European and gospel music
artists, SESAC now represents artists in genres including rock, dance
music, country, Latin and contemporary Christian music.

o Report: Microsoft to Lose $750 Million on Xbox This Year, $1.1B Next

San Francisco -- Technology business publication Red Herring recently
reported that a source familiar with the matter says that Microsoft
expects to lose $750 million on its Xbox video game console this year, and
$1.1 billion next year. Microsoft declined to comment on these figures for
the story, but with an estimated $42 billion in cash reserves, the company
would be able to absorb the losses. The article also reports that
Microsoft is considering a hybrid box that would combine the Xbox with the
personal video recorder functionality of its UltimateTV device and
service. "Regarding a hybrid box, we are moving full steam ahead with Xbox
in its current state while staying deadly focused on games. Of course we
have engineers looking at dozens of possibilities for the future of the
console," Microsoft spokesman David Hufford told Red Herring.

communications devices, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired the MPEG
video compression business of GlobespanVirata for $21 million in cash and
1.25 million Conexant shares. Newport Beach, Calif.-based Conexant said
the acquisition will enable it to develop video products for devices such

GlobespanVirata employees in the MPEG development division, which will

> Highlights From This Morning's "Digital Music" Panel | Washington, DC

Panelists at Digital Media Wire's Digital Music panel in Washington DC
this morning pondered "What's Next" for the industry, discussing the role
of policy and regulation in shaping the future of digital music. Here are
some of the highlights:

* Michael Bracy (Future of Music Coalition): We hope that the business
models that emerge favor the artist and that the artists will have a voice
in shaping those models.

* Philip Corwin (Butera & Andrews) There is nothing about P2P services
that prevent the labels from offering better services than they are now
offering. As to the argument that you cannot compete with something that
is free, tell me that the next time you are drinking a bottle of water.

* Mitch Glazier (RIAA): P2P is great, CD burning is great, but it is the
abuse of these technologies that is the problem. There is clear evidence,
despite reports to the contrary, that free file-sharing services have cut
into CD sales.

* John Coletta (BMI): It is not necessary for artists to have one
viewpoint on these issues. Some see P2P as beneficial, while others see it
as detrimental. We don't believe that the artist community needs to be in
complete agreement on this point.

* Lee Shubert (KMZ Rosenman): From a legislative viewpoint, the problem
with Congress is that it often enacts laws that stifle technological
development because it responds so slowly to technological issues.
Congress will be hard-pressed to come up with legislation that will
address piracy without preventing technological development.

* David Leibowitz (CH Boston & Verance): I do not know if the legal
digital music services that survive will be purely subscription based or
add-on services like what AOL is doing. Technology, such as digital
watermarking, will make possible sustainable business models in the
future.

30 Reasons to Attend Jupiter Plug.IN -- July 8-9 - NYC

Reason #15: Portability is a long way from Secure Portability.
In the absence of rental-ready digital music devices, portability remains
the Achilles' heel for paid subscription services attempting to compete
with MP3. Non-secure devices will continue to proliferate, with 41 million
users and 70 million devices in 2007. What is the line Subscription
Services must toe between satisfying consumer demand for portability, and
label demand for security? Find out at Plug.IN.
