o Mashboxx Legal File-Sharing Service Licenses EMI Catalog

New York - Mashboxx, a legal peer-to-peer music file-sharing service, announced on Friday that major record label EMI has licensed its entire catalog for trading in the U.S. Sony BMG has also licensed its catalog to Mashboxx, which uses Napster founder Shawn Fanning's Snocap service to ensure only authorized tracks may be downloaded. Mashboxx will allow users to download songs and listen to full-tracks five times; if not then purchased, the tracks become just 30-second samples. Purchased tracks may be burned to CD up to seven times, played on up to five PCs, and transferred to Windows Media-compatible portable players. "When it rolls out, Mashboxx will be a no-obligation way for fans to really immerse themselves in discovering music, turning their friends on to what they like and getting excited about artists and music they've not yet heard," said David Munns, chairman and CEO of EMI Music North America. Mashboxx said it will soon begin beta testing its peer-to-peer application.

The board of directors said that D'Amico's main objective will be to facilitate the sale of the company, which declared bankruptcy in 2004 and has since been controlled by its bondholders. o RealNetworks Quarterly Profit Up; Shares Fall 3% on Forecast

Seattle - Media delivery technology provider RealNetworks announced this week that its second-quarter profit jumped to $38.9 million, up from $4.7 million in the second quarter a year ago, but lower-than-expected projections for the third quarter sent its shares down 3%. The company credited its legal settlement with Microsoft, and gains in its subscription music and games businesses for the second quarter boost. RealNetworks said sales at its RealArcade games business were up 55%, while sales for its music services including Rhapsody increased 21%. Overall, the company has seen flat subscriber growth overall for its music and games subscription services this year, but said that decreases in subscribers to premium services it has decided not to pursue were balanced by the increase in subscribers to its music services. Seattle-based RealNetworks also announced a deal with Mexican telco Telmex, to provide its online music and games services to the company's 1.3 million broadband subscribers.

o Parents Group Criticizes V-Chip PSA Campaign; TV Legislation Favored

San Francisco - The Parents Television Council, an advocacy group for family-friendly programming, has criticized a $300 million PSA campaign launched by broadcasters and pay-TV providers that aims to educate parents on how to use the V-chip and other technologies to filter programming for children, CNET News.com reported. The group said that the current TV ratings system is inadequate, and instead backed a House bill called the Family Choice Act of 2006. The proposed legislation would require cable and satellite services to either apply broadcast indecency standards; allow subscribers to opt out of objectionable channels; or create a programming tier that fits their family-friendly needs.

o Rolling Stones to Broadcast European Dates Live Over Paid Phone Service

Los Angeles - The Rolling Stones have announced plans to offer fans the ability to call a toll-free number and pay a fee to hear live performances from their upcoming European tour. The Listen Live Now service was developed by tour promoter Live Nation, Creative Artists Agency and artist manager Marty Erlichman. Fans can dial 1-877-784-2777 and pay $1.99 per seven minutes to hear a live feed of the Stones concert on each night of their tour, which lasts through Sept. 3. European time zones will make for U.S. call-in times in the early afternoon to early evening. "It's a great thing for the artists," Erlichman told Reuters. "It's passive income, and they're helping fans enjoy the experience without affecting ticket sales."
