Ads on eBay Outside U.S.
Mountain View, Calif. - Google announced on Monday that it
has signed a multi-year agreement with online auction giant eBay, to
provide text-based advertising for eBay outside the U.S. The
companies also plan to launch "click-to-call" advertising
functionality on eBay, which will allow a user to click on a link or
icon within a product or service ad to initiate an Internet-based
phone call to eBay merchants or Google advertisers. The
click-to-call service will utilize both eBay's Skype Internet
telephone service and Google Talk, the company's Web and voice chat
software. The companies did not disclose specific details of the
arrangement, except to say that will involve revenue sharing. Google
and eBay plan to begin several months of testing for the text-based
advertising and click-to-call initiatives in early 2007, and will
also explore interoperability between Skype and Google Talk via open
standards.

o Corel to Acquire DVD
Software Developer InterVideo for $196 Million
Ottawa, Canada - Corel Corporation, a provider of
productivity, graphics and digital imaging software, announced on
Monday that it has acquired InterVideo, a developer of multimedia
DVD software, for about $196 million in cash. Canada-based Corel's
software products include WordPerfect, CorelDRAW and Paint Shop Pro.
The company said its acquisition of InterVideo and its WinDVD
software will enable it to offer a full range of digital media
applications, from photo-sharing and image editing products to
advanced digital imaging, video editing and high-definition DVD
creation and playback software. Corel said InterVideo's strength in
Asian markets will also aid in its targeted expansion of its own
products. "With outstanding products, talented employees and deep
relationships with eight of the world's top ten PC manufacturers,
InterVideo represents a significant opportunity for Corel to deliver
enhanced value to our shareholders," said Corel CEO David Dobson.
The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter.

o EchoStar
Countersuit Against TiVo Put on Hold
Alviso, Calif. - A federal judge has put a hold on a
patent infringement suit filed by satellite TV provider EchoStar
against digital video recorder firm TiVo, while the U.S. Patent
Office reexamines the EchoStar patents in question. "The
reexamination requests TiVo submitted to the USPTO detail how a
large number of prior art references that the USPTO did not
previously consider raise substantial new questions regarding the
validity of the claims EchoStar asserted and why those claims are
invalid," TiVo said in a statement. The ruling is the second recent
blow to EchoStar, which last week was ordered in a separate case to
pay TiVo nearly $74 million in damages for willfully infringing
TiVo's patents. An injunction against EchoStar's manufacture and use
of DISH Network digital video recorders that utilize TiVo patents
was put on hold last week, while a higher court hears an appeal of
that ruling.

o Report: Online
Music Sales to Begin to Offset Overall Decline in 2010
London - Online music sales will begin to offset the
decline in overall music sales in the European market, but not until
2010, according to a report from market research firm Screen Digest.
The overall European market has lost 22% of its value since 2001,
and is expected to continue its current decline until 2010.
Meanwhile, the online music market is expected to more than double,
from $155 million last year to $358 million by the end of 2006, and
is projected to generate more than $1.4 billion by 2010. Growth of
online sales is credited to increased penetration of both broadband
and portable music players -- which over 7% of Europeans now own.
"Online sales alone are not going to be enough to halt the decline
in music sales," said Screen Digest analyst Dan Cryan. "We believe
with the right strategy -- including mobile and online -- that the
worst might be over by 2010. The industry must adopt a broader
approach to selling music, looking beyond the traditional single and
album."

Monday that it has acquired Baseline StudioSystems, an online
database and research service for information on the film and
television industries, from Hollywood Media Corp., for $35 million
in cash. Baseline StudioSystems supplies entertainment information
in Hollywood, with numerous studio and television production
companies among its subscribers. It also provides non-professional
entertainment information to consumer-oriented websites. "This
acquisition supports our plan to build the authoritative online
destination for the entertainment consumer and for the industry,"
said Janet Robinson, president and CEO of The New York Times Co.

Content Distributor PlayPhone Raises $9.1 Million
San Jose, Calif. - PlayPhone, a provider of
direct-to-consumer mobile content distribution services, said on
Monday that it has raised $9.1 million in its second round of
funding, led by Menlo Ventures. Previous investor Cardinal Venture
Partners also participated. The company said that it will use the
infusion of cash to help further establish its brand and launch new
mobile services. San Jose, Calif.-based PlayPhone's technology
allows consumers to purchase content such as ringtones and mobile
games. The company's list of mobile game partners include I-play,
Glu Mobile, Vivendi Mobile Games and Sega Mobile.

million unique users have now logged onto Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection,
the company's free wireless gaming service for its DS handheld game
system. The company added that, since launching Wi-Fi Connection
nine months ago, the service has also logged more than 70 million
individual game sessions. Nintendo also announced that its "Star Fox
Command" title for DS has now been enabled as a multiplayer title on

Disney to Release $39 Plug-and-play/Handheld Game Device
Los Angeles - Performance Designed Products (PDP), a Los
Angeles-based design firm focused on the gaming industry, announced
on Monday that it has partnered with Disney Electronics to
manufacture a line of portable gaming units featuring Disney
characters. The Disney GAMEiT is both a portable device that can be
played on the go, and a plug-and-play system that can be hooked
directly to a TV. Each unit will come pre-loaded with 24 titles from
Disney's Buena Vista Games, such as "Mickey's Apple Cart" and
"Donald's Tugboat Adventures." The $39 GAMEiT line will ship to
retailers in September.

N.Y. Times Identifies Creator of YouTube Virtuoso Guitar Video
New York - The New York Times recently reported on a virtuoso
guitar performance video of a rock version of Pachelbel's famous
"Canon in D Major," posted to the video-sharing site YouTube by a
previously unknown young Asian man who called himself "funtwo".
After several fakers came forward to proclaim they were the creators
of the video -- which has been viewed over 7 million times on
YouTube -- The Times traced its source to 23-year-old Korean Jeong-Hyun
Lim. On why he didn't show his face when performing in the video,
Lim told The Times, "Main purpose of my recording is to hear the
other's suggestions about my playing. I think play is more
significant than appearance. Therefore I want the others to focus on
my fingering and sound. Furthermore I know I'm not that handsome."
