o Apple Introduces iTunes Cell Phone,
iPod Nano
San Francisco -- Apple on Wednesday introduced its anticipated
iTunes cell phone, a Motorola ROKR handset that includes Apple's
iTunes music player software, which will go on sale Thursday from
network operator Cingular Wireless for $249. The silver phone
features a color-screen display, stereo speakers and a camera, and
can add up to 100 songs, podcasts, audiobooks and other audio
content from a computer via a USB connection. "It's an iPod shuffle
right on your phone," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs, referring to the
smallest of its iPod player models, which also features flash-based
memory and random playback of songs. Apple also introduced the iPod
nano, a new flash memory-based iPod model that is thinner than a No.
2 pencil and will replace the iPod mini line. The iPod nano features
a color display and will come in $199, 2GB (500 song) and $249, 4GB
(1,000 song) capacities. Finally, Apple announced that carmakers
Acura, Audi, Honda and Volkswagen will offer iPod integration with
car stereos in their 2006 model lines -- marking more than 15
companies that will release over 5 million cars with iPod support
during 2006.

o MPAA Says
German eDonkey File-Sharing Hub Shut Down
Los Angeles -- The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
recently announced that a highly-trafficked German website that
provided links to downloads on the eDonkey peer-to-peer file-sharing
network has been shut down, the result of lawsuits filed against
sites where copyrighted TV shows are being traded for free. The
eDonkey site shutdown comes in the wake of a new study from
U.K.-based CacheLogic, which found that eDonkey has recently
overtaken BitTorrent as the most popular peer-to-peer file-sharing
application worldwide. The MPAA said that a German regional court
granted an injunction against the site -- The Realworld, which
offered 900 TV shows; its operator, German resident Wulf Rajek; and
the Swiss Web hosting firm that housed The Realworld. The defendants
face copyright infringement damage claims and up to five years in
prison under German criminal law.

o Samsung Plans
DVD Player That Supports Both Blu-ray, HD DVD
Frankfurt -- Korean consumer electronics firm Samsung plans to
bypass the looming format war for next-generation DVD formats by
releasing a player that supports both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD,
Reuters reported. While Samsung officially backs Sony's Blu-ray
format, the company's forthcoming player will also play discs
formatted for Toshiba's rival HD DVD format. Sony and Toshiba and
their respective backers recently retreated from talks on combining
the standards in the hopes of avoiding a format war, similar to the
one seen between VHS and Beta in the videocassette market. "We would
welcome a unified standard but if this doesn't come, which looks
likely, we'll bring a unified solution to market," Choi Gee-sung,
Samsung's head of consumer electronics, told Financial Times
Deutschland.
