Bush Signs Bill Banning Internet Gambling
Washington, DC - President Bush today signed into law a
ban on online wagering. The legislation was included in the SAFE
Port Act. The decision by the Republican majority to lump the
Internet gambling ban onto the bipartisan ports bill had drawn loud
criticism from industry groups for the legalization and regulation
of online gambling. Opponents of the new law include Poker Players
Alliance a grassroots advocacy organization of more than 110,000
poker enthusiasts. "Today is a dark day for the great American game
of poker," said Michael Bolcerek, president of alliance. "Congress
had a real opportunity to create good public policy by licensing,
regulating and taxing Internet poker... This decision will prove to
be detrimental in the long-run and leaves more than $4 billion in
annual tax revenue on the table." The legislation contains specific
exemptions for Internet wagers on horse racing, state lotteries and
fantasy sports.

Report: Video Game Sales Soar in September
According to new data from market research firm, the NPD Group,
September's video game sales jumped an impressive 38%, as compared
with the same period one year ago. The industry is up 11% as
compared to 2005 with no indication of sales slowing down, according
to video game analyst Anita Frazier, who stated that a record year
for the industry "is a given." Total video game sales were $777
million for the month, up from $563 million in September of last
year. Hardware sales rose 71% to $244 million from last year's $143
million. Software sales climbed 29% to $446 million from $347
million in the year-ago period, and sales of accessories jumped 21%
to $88 million from $73 million.

Google Faces YouTube Copyright Fight from Time Warner
Los Angeles – Dick Parsons, the chairman and chief
executive of Time Warner, said the company would pursue copyright
infringement cases against YouTube, the video sharing site acquired
by Google this week for $1.65 Billion. “You can assume we're in
negotiations with YouTube,” Parsons said in an interview with The
Guardian, “and that those negotiations will be kicked up to the
Google level in the hope that we can get to some acceptable
position.” He said Google’s acquisition of YouTube was not the
deciding factor in his decision to take heightened action. "If you
let one thing ignore your rights as an owner it makes it much more
difficult to defend those rights when the next guy comes along."
Parsons did concede that he would be interested in Time Warner’s
content being displayed on YouTube, but for a price. “We'd like to
have our content displayed on these platforms, but on a basis that
it respects our rights as the owner of that content.” YouTube
founder Chad Hurley said he does not have copyright infringement
fears because of actions the company is taking to curb the issue.
“We're committed to developing tools to identify the content and
monetize it so [content owners] can have a new outlet for their
content.” Warner Music, Sony BMG, and CBS have all made recent deals
with YouTube to allow their content to be used in return for revenue
sharing.

UK Gambling Firms Start Pulling Out Of US Ahead of Ban
Britain's Sportingbet and Leisure & Gaming both pulled out of the
United States ahead of a ban on Internet gambling on Friday, each
selling their U.S. operations to private investors for $1. Smaller
rival World Gaming meanwhile said it was impossible to continue in
business and called in administrators. All three companies were
rushing to complete the deals before President George W. Bush signed
a bill to prohibit Internet gambling into law on Friday. Sportingbet
had discharged liabilities of $13.2 million and avoided closure
costs of $14 million by selling to investors for $1. Leisure &
Gaming Chief Executive Alistair Assheton led a management buyout of
his group's U.S. operations for $1 himself, rather than close them
down and fire 300 staff. The exit from the United States comes after
Republican legislators delivered a heavy blow to Internet gambling
this month when Congress unexpectedly approved a bill to enforce
prohibition of online gaming.

Conflicting Predictions About Ad Spending
Wilton, Conn. - Internet advertising overall remained
solid during the third quarter despite Yahoo’s warning last month of
slower ad sales. That is the conclusion of several analysts, reports
Mediapost, predicting good results for the quarterly earnings next
week from several major Internet and advertising companies, like
Google and Yahoo. "We continue to see robust growth in the online advertising sector,"
said Aaron Kessler, a senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray & Co,
to Mediapost. The investment firm estimates Internet ad growth of
about 30 percent during the third quarter, roughly on par with
quarterly gains during the first half of the year. That's a substantial increase from the last quarterly poll, which
revealed that client and agency executives planned on an 8 percent
increase. The Internet also gained clout with CMOs and buy-side
decision-makers, according to a new survey from Credit Suisse. It
shows that executives plan to boost ad spending on the Web by 17
percent over the next year. However, there are also analysts that are not that bullish on
advertising spending. Merrill Lynch has downgraded its outlook for
U.S. ad spending for 2006 and 2007, lowering its growth estimate
this year to 4.7 percent from 5.1 percent and dropping its forecast
for next year to 2.8 percent from 3.5 percent, according to Adweek.
Radio took a big hit, as Merrill downgraded this year's estimate to
flat from 1.9 percent growth and dropped its 2007 growth projection
to just 1 percent from 2.2 percent.
Merrill was optimistic about
one sector in particular, characterizing the Internet and other
digital platforms as bright spots in an otherwise underwhelming
market. The firm projected Internet ad growth to soar nearly 30
percent in 2006 and another 22 percent next year

AMD Moves Closer to Completing $5.4 Billion ATI Acquisition
Sunnyvale, Calif. - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the
computer chipmaker and main competitor to Intel, said on Friday that
its proposed $5.4 billion acquisition of Canadian graphics chipmaker
ATI Technologies has been approved by the Minister of Industry under
the Investment Canada Act, satisfying one of its conditions for
closing. To secure the approval, AMD promised to increase the number
of employees in research and development activities in Canada, as
well as the amount it spends in R&D in the country. The deal, first
announced in July, also on Friday received approval from ATI's
shareholders. It is expected to close the week of Oct. 23.

Under Pressure, FCC Delays Vote on AT&T-BellSouth Merger
Atlanta - The Federal Communications Commission's (FCC)
vote on AT&T's planned $80 billion acquisition of Atlanta-based
BellSouth, a decision that was expected to occur on Friday, has been
postponed by the FCC in response to requests by two Democratic
members, Jonathan Adelstein and Michael Copps. "In the last 48
hours, new proposals were made for addressing concerns raised in
this proceeding," the two commissioners said in a letter to FCC
Chairman Kevin Martin, asking for additional public comment on the
deal. "These proposals raise a number of significant questions and
complex technical issues for us to consider," their letters said. On
Wednesday, the merger deal was approved by the U.S. Dept. of
Justice, leaving the FCC vote as the last major regulatory hurdle to
the deal's closing. Although the Republicans have a 3-2 majority at
the FCC, Robert McDowell, one of the Republican majority, has
recused himself from voting since he previously represented
competitors of AT&T and BellSouth. That means that one of the
Democrats on the FCC must vote in favor of the deal in order for it
to pass.

Enterbrain Predicts Sony PS3 to Outsell Xbox 360, Wii
Tokyo – In November Sony and Nintendo will roll out their
newest gaming devices, the PlayStation 3 (PS3) and Wii, both of
which will compete directly with Microsoft’s Xbox 360. “The PS3 will
have a tough time globally at the initial stage,” Enterbrain
President Hirokazu Hamamura told a seminar. “Its launch titles in
Japan and exclusive software titles overseas are quite limited. But
its overwhelmingly realistic graphics will give it a long life span.
It will stay competitive even when a game console battle breaks out
among a newer generation of machines in 2010. Sales should grow
every time Sony cuts prices,” he said. Enterbrain said Sony should
sell 4.13 million units of the PS3 worldwide in the current business
year ending March 2007. Sony itself hopes to ship 6 million units
over the same period. The publisher believes Nintendo will sell 5.47
million units of the Wii by March, compared with Nintendo's own
target to sell 6 million units. Hamamura said that aside from the
lack of game titles at the start, PS3 sales will be hampered by its
high price tag. Sony expects a model of the PS3 with a 20-gigabyte
hard disk drive and a Blu-ray high-definition optical disc player to
sell for $499 in the United States, about twice as much as the Wii
price.

Air America Radio Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection
New York - Air America Radio, a liberal

attempts to resolve issues with its creditors. Also on Friday, the

U2 Rocker Bono Promotes New iPod Nano Red
Apple will contribute $10 from the sale of each new red-colored iPod
nano to The Global Fund, an organization headed up by humanitarian
Rocker Bono that fights AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The model,
priced the same as its $199 cousins, goes on sale Friday. The
limited edition iPod Nano is part of dozens or so of "(Product) Red"
items that will go on sale in the coming weeks by Gap Inc., Apple
Computer Inc., Motorola Inc., Converse Inc. and Emporio Armani.
Portions of the product sales will go to The Global Fund, an
organization that fights AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. With
Apple's iPod alone, The Global Fund stands to raise millions of
dollars. During the holiday quarter in 2005, Apple sold 14 million
iPods. The iPod maker also plans to donate some proceeds from a $25
iTunes Red gift card to the organization. "I love the fact that Bono
is trying to do something about this problem," Apple's CEO Steve
Jobs said in a phone interview with AP. "I've never been to Africa,
but you don't have to go there to know there are a lot of people
dying of AIDS there. In a small way, this is something we could do
about it."

Google's Blogger Suffers Outage
Mountain View, CA – Google’s Blogger publishing service
suffered a “network malfunction” yesterday that caused an outage and
kept Blogger.com and the Blogspot hosting services down for two
hours. “We know how important Blogger is to our users, so we take
issues like this very seriously,” a Google spokeswoman wrote via
e-mail. One Google Blogger, Mark Nolan, who hosts a personal blog
about soccer, told PC World in a phone interview that he has not
been pleased with the service so far. “This isn't what you'd expect
from an operation like Google. It's embarrassing in my opinion.”
Google acquired Blogger in early 2003 when it bought Pyra Labs.
Since then, Google has been widely criticized for failing to make
any major upgrades from the original service. The Blogger team has
lost many key employees since the acquisition, including Evan
Williams, the man who founded Pyra Labs, in October 2004.
