Steve Jobs Disses Microsoft’s Zune
San Francisco, CA - Apple Computer does not fear
competition from Microsoft's new Zune music player, Chief Executive
Steve Jobs said in an interview in this week’s edition of Newsweek.
He refers to demonstrations that he has seen of Zune’s interface
which he viewed as complicated and not user friendly enough. Jobs
especially thinks this when it comes to sharing music wirelessly
between Zune users, a feature that has been mentioned as one of
Zune’s main competitive advantages over the current generation of
iPod’s.

CNET Puts Its Hopes In New TV Service After Options Scandal
San Francisco, CA - CNET, the consumer electronics and
technology website, announced Monday the official launch of its
video site CNET TV, as well as a new partnership with Verizon to
distribute CNET’s video through on-demand television. CNET TV
launched earlier this year in beta version and features original
content for people interested in today’s latest gadget reviews, help
and how-to videos and breaking tech news. CNET is already
distributed via on-demand through Cox Communications and TiVo. CNET
TV also features downloadable content in form of a video podcast
available for users based on the channels they subscribe to. The
announcement of CNET TV comes just a few days after it said its
chairman and chief executive had resigned over his role in the
company's backdated stock options. CNET also recently cut its
revenue outlook and by the new TV service, the company is hoping to
ride the wave of popularity that Internet-videos have had lately.

Text Message Advertising Slow To Catch On In The US
New York, NY - In a recent study of the
effectiveness of text message advertising to cell phones, marketing
research firm eMarketer found that a sizable percentage of mobile
subscribers are responding to short codes placed in advertisements
or other media. However, the US and Germany fall far behind
countries like Spain and the UK in the effectiveness of using this
medium as a platform to deliver advertising.
Of the five countries surveyed, Spain topped the list with 29% of
mobile users responding to ads, followed by the UK at 18.5% and
France at 10%. The US and Germany were both under 10%.
"These numbers are not unlike what we saw in e-mail response during
the mid-1990's as the Web emerged [as] an advertising medium," said
Will Hodgman, CEO of M:Metrics.
Contests — such as game or reality television shows or chances to
win free merchandise — were the leading driver of responses, with 18
million subscribers across the geographies reporting they
participated.

FreeHand Systems Acquires Electronic Courseware Systems
Los Altos, Calif. - FreeHand Systems, a Los Altos-based
provider of digital sheet music products and services, said on
Monday that it has completed its acquisition of Illinois-based
Electronic Courseware Systems (ECS), a privately held computer
software developer and publisher of music and music education
products. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. ECS was
founded in 1981 to make music software available to teachers and
students on low-cost home computers. The company now has more than
40,000 customers, including schools, private teachers, students and
home users. The company has previously developed software for
companies such as Roland, Yamaha, IBM, Baldwin Piano and Organ, as
well as major textbook and music publishers. The technology will be
a nice fit for FreeHand, which manufactures a digital music tablet
that lets users display and publish digitally delivered sheet music.
The company also operates a web site that offers more than 85,000
titles for digital download, which can then be transferred to the
tablet.

Yahoo to Offer Local News Clips From CBS
San Francisco – Yahoo will start showing news clips from 16
CBS television stations this week in a deal announced today. The
most trafficked website on the internet has struck similar deals
before, showing national and international news from CBS (“60
Minutes”), Walt Disney Co.’s ABC, and Time Warner Inc.’s CNN. Yahoo
will share advertising revenue generated by the videos with the
television stations. Dmitry Shapiro, Chief Executive of video
start-up Veoh Networks, criticized the company, saying, “Yahoo
almost seems to be telling people what they should be watching
instead of letting them make their own choices.” The clips will
begin running on Yahoo’s news site tomorrow.

Sprint Nextel Wins Stay in Ongoing Dispute with Affiliate
Reston, Va. - Sprint Nextel, the Reston-based wireless giant,
said on Monday that the Illinois Court of Appeals has granted a stay
in its ongoing litigation with affiliate iPCS. The company said that
it plans to continue operating its Nextel network throughout iPCS's
territories for the foreseeable future. The territories include
secondary markets in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska and a
portion of Indiana. In August, the Cook County (Ill.) Circuit Court
ruled that Sprint's merger with Nextel violated Sprint's affiliate
agreement with iPCS. Now, Sprint Nextel is appealing that decision,
and expects a verdict in seven to nine months.
