o Report: 2002 Video Game, Hardware Sales On Track to Top $10 Billion
Port Washington, N.Y. -- Sales of video game hardware and software have
totaled over $6 billion so far this year -- up 25 percent over the same
period in 2001 -- and are on track to easily beat all-time records,
according to data released on Tuesday by New York-based market research
firm NPDFunworld. The firm expects total 2002 sales totals to top $10
billion, breaking 2001's record of $9.4 billion. In October, developer
Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" for PlayStation 2 was the
top seller, moving 1.4 million units in its first month of availability.
The rest of the top five sellers in October were also PlayStaiton 2
titles. In order, they were, Electronic Arts' "NBA Live 2003," Square EA's
"Kingdom Hearts," Electronic Arts' "Madden NFL 2003" and Eidos
Interactive's "Hitman 2: Assassin." "Another 200 new video game titles are
expected to be released prior to the New Year across five viable systems,
such as Microsoft's Xbox, Nintendo's GameCube and GameBoy Advance, and
Sony's PlayStation 2 and PS One. With so many games to choose from, it's
no wonder the video game industry is headed for a record-breaking year,"
said NPDFunworld senior account manager Richard Ow.

head of the division, and represent about 15 percent of the division's 600
employees. Sources told Reuters that those laid off will include local
advertising sales and support staff in the company's Dulles, Virginia
headquarters, New York and some other smaller markets.

ensure strong sales during the holiday shopping season. A Sony spokesman
