o Judge Inclined to Compel Kazaa to Face U.S. Copyright Charges

Los Angeles -- A U.S. federal judge said he is inclined to allow Sharman
Networks, which operates the Kazaa file-sharing service, to stand trial
for copyright infringement in the U.S., according to published reports.
Sharman is registered in the island-nation of Vanuatu, operates out of
Australia and delivers content from non-U.S. servers. The company was sued
by a number of U.S. entertainment companies for copyright infringement,
and argued in court on Monday that it should not be under the jurisdiction
of U.S. courts. "I find the argument about providing the service to so
many California residents compelling, said U.S. District Court Judge
Stephen Wilson, referring to copyright holders' argument that 2 million
Kazaa users live in California, the Associated Press reported. Wilson did
not rule on Monday, but is expected to within several weeks; if the judge
rules against Sharman's foreign status in this matter, the company will be
added to an existing suit against Grokster and Streamcast Networks, two
other file-sharing services.

o Sony Pictures Forms Digital Policy Lobbying Group

Culver City, Calif. -- Sony Pictures Entertainment on Tuesday announced
the formation of a Digital Policy Group, which will coordinate the secure
distribution of Sony digital media content across the entire company. The
new division will represent Sony Pictures' position in cross-industry
negotiations, legislative and regulatory matters. It will also review new
technologies that secure digital recording and distribution and
synchronize Sony Pictures divisions to ensure a consistent approach to
digital formats and distribution. Beth Berke, chief administrative officer
and executive vice president of Sony Pictures, was named to head the
Digital Policy Group. "We're quickly moving to a world where content is
distributed over a network of devices and through new technologies, some
of which are being created as we speak. Sony has a unique opportunity to
create strategies that permit the maximum flexibility to the consumer
electronics and computer industries, while at the same time providing the
necessary protection to our content," said Berke.

(New York) The New York Times recently reported on a Dutch TV movie
entitled "Necrocam," about a group of friends that pledge to install an
Internet-connected webcam into the coffin of the first of them to die,
"making her virtually immortal." The movie is now available on the Web. On
whether such a webcam could be installed into a coffin in the U.S., Robert
Fells, general counsel for the Virginia-based International Cemetery and
Funeral Association, told The Times: "People have always had strange ideas
-- either for laughs, or morbid humor or just bizarre thinking -- of how
they would like the ultimate final disposition of their remains, only to
be overruled either by family members or legal authorities. This just
sounds like a high-tech version of that."
